London Fog (Tea Latte) – Detoxinista Recipe

If you’re looking for a delicious alternative to lattes and coffee drinks made with refined sugar, this London Fog recipe is for you. It’s not made in a traditional way (there’s no steamed milk involved) but it’s so easy and delicious that I think it will become your new favorite.

All you need is is 3 simple ingredients to make this dairy-free latte, including brewed tea, Medjool dates, and almond butter. If you’ve tried making milk from almond butter, you already know this works brilliantly… but if you haven’t tried that yet, you’re in for a treat. (Literally!)

It’s ready to drink in just about 5 minutes, and all you’ll need is a blender to get started.

Ingredients YOu’ll Need

  • Brewed Tea. Earl grey tea is the base of a London Fog latte. It has a floral flavor that pairs well with a hint of sweetness. Use tea bags or loose leaf tea, depending on your preference.
  • Medjool Dates. Instead of relying on simple syrup or refined sugar, one to two pitted dates will add sweetness (and fiber!) to this healthier latte.
  • Almond Butter. A teaspoon of almond butter adds creaminess to this drink, so it tastes like a latte without using expensive store-bought milk or diluting the tea’s flavor. Any other mild-flavored nut butter should work, too.

How to Make a London Fog

Step 1:

Start by brewing a strong cup of Earl Grey tea. I usually use loose-leaf tea when I make this at home, but you can also use tea bags, instead. For a strong cup of tea, use two tea bags for approximately 12 to 16 ounces of boiled water.

Let the tea steep for 3 to 5 minutes. I like to use a travel mug for this step, to keep the tea as hot as possible.

Note: The amount of water you use is up to you and your taste buds. I usually brew a 16 ounce serving, which means my drink will be slightly diluted both in sweetness and tea flavor. If you prefer a more pronounced tea flavor, you may want to use only 12 ounces of water. Feel free to experiment with it until you find the ratio you prefer. (This may mean using more or less dates, too.)

Step 2:

While you wait for the tea to finish brewing, add two pitted Medjool dates and a teaspoon of creamy almond butter to a high-speed blender. It’s best to use a “raw” almond butter that doesn’t have a strong roasted flavor. (Cashew butter will work, too.)

When the tea is done brewing, remove the leaves and pour the tea into the blender. Secure the lid and blend until the mixture looks smooth and creamy, with no visible pieces of dates.

Step 3:

Pour the blended mixture into your mug and enjoy it warm right away.

If you find that your blender didn’t fully pulverize the date pieces, arrange a fine mesh strainer over your mug to catch those pieces as you pour. (It will also catch some of the foam, if you’re not a fan of that.)

  • 1 to 2 Earl Grey tea bags (or loose leaf tea)
  • 2 Medjool dates , pitted
  • 1 teaspoon almond butter (or cashew butter)
  • Prepare the Earl Grey tea by pouring 12 to 16 ounces of boiling water over the tea bags in a mug. I like to use 2 tea bags (or a big scoop of loose leaf tea) for an extra-strong tea flavor, but you can use just 1 bag if you prefer a more mild drink. Cover the mug with a tea saucer, to lock in the heat as it steeps.

  • After the tea has brewed for 3 to 5 minutes, remove the tea bags and pour the hot tea into a blender. Add in the dates, almond butter, and vanilla, and blend until very smooth and creamy.

  • If you have a powerful blender, like the Vitamix, you can pour the mixture directly into your mug and drink it right away, as the dates should be totally pulverized. If you are using a regular blender, I recommend holding a fine mesh strainer over your mug as you pour the blended mixture into your cup, so the strainer will catch any stray pieces of dates. (You don’t want chunks in your drink!)

  • Serve the hot tea latte right away and enjoy.

Nutrition information is for the whole batch. Depending on how much water you use, you should get an 8 to 16 ounce drink from this batch.
Keep Your Drink Hot: I brew my tea in a travel mug like this one (affiliate link) to keep the tea as hot as possible before blending.
Brewing Loose Leaf Tea: I originally shared this recipe years ago when we used tea bags, but we’ve switched to using loose leaf tea now. If you want to get started, you’ll need a stainless steel brewing basket and loose leaf tea like this. (affiliate links)
Update Note: This recipe was updated in 2025, but the only change to the recipe was removing the vanilla extract and mentioning that I usually use 16 ounces of boiled water to brew the tea. Add a 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract if you miss it, and if you prefer a stronger drink, use only 8 to 12 ounces of boiled water for the tea.
